Same test in Xubuntu 6.06.1

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

And with Ubuntu 6.06.1 it don't work ejecting the cd by pressing the hw-button:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.15-26-386 #1 PREEMPT Thu Aug 3 02:52:00 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linuxubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrom'
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = true

I can only unmount it with the normal way:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed

Are you sure that the CD was mounted in Kubuntu and Xubuntu, not just inserted without being mounted? I'm asking because there were no volume.is_mounted changes in those logs, so it didn't unmount as far as HAL knows.

Same here in Ubuntu 6.10:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 2.6.17-10-generic #2 SMP Fri Oct 13 18:45:35 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrom'
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = true

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed

Now I removed the drivelock and tested again:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo sh -c 'echo "dev.cdrom.lock=0" >> /etc/sysctl.conf'
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo /sbin/sysctl -p
kernel.printk = 4 4 1 7
dev.cdrom.lock = 0
dev.cdrom.lock = 0
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrom'
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed
volume_label_VIDEODVD added

I got an warning-message of unsafe removal of a disk. Please use the right-click-eject function to do it.

If I change the the disc, in this example to VIDEODVD the disc don't get mounted.

Only if I eject it the right way and load it again it gets mounted:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_VIDEODVD removed
volume_label_VIDEODVD added
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrom'
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_VIDEODVD property volume.is_mounted = true

So it is a GNOME thing and has nothing to do with HAL or the Kernel.

Yes they where mounted. I could access the files but I'll redo the test to look what happen when I access the files in KDE and XFCE.

You where right. If the discs are mounted also KDE don't eject them. I tried to eject also the rw-drive by pressing the hw-button. Nothing happend in KDE. I'll do the same in Ubuntu 6.06.1 now.

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO added
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.mount_point = '/media/hdc'
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted = true

I used the normal way:
Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO removed

The test with the rw-drive:
Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = '/media/hdd'
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = true
storage_model_HL_DT_ST_GCE_8520B condition EjectPressed =
storage_model_HL_DT_ST_GCE_8520B condition EjectPressed =
storage_model_HL_DT_ST_GCE_8520B condition EjectPressed =
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed

In Ubunut 6.06.1 Gnome unmounts the disc on the rw-drive after the button-pressed-notification. It seems the ro-drive don't send it:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD added
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrecorder'
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = true
storage_model_HL_DT_ST_GCE_8520B condition EjectPressed =
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_Gentoo_Linux_2006_1_x86_LiveCD removed
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO added
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.mount_point = '/media/cdrom'
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted_read_only = true
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted = true
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.mount_point = ''
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted_read_only = false
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO property volume.is_mounted = false
volume_label_DVD_VIDEO removed

So this test needs more people with ro-drives to verify it is only my drive or ro-drives in general.

Ok, then it's all clear, I've obviously assumed that you're talking about the case when the disc is mounted. The drive is not locked when the disc is not mounted, so the eject button works fine.
The reason that the eject button of your DVD-ROM drive doesn't work when mounted is a hardware limitation, your drive simply doesn't support it; there's nothing any software can do about it. It also has nothing to do with the fact, that it's a read-only drive, the CD writer of my older laptop didn't support it either. If it bothers you, you need to buy a new drive. I assume that all currently available drives support it, I'm not sure, though.
