How are run levels handled? How can I skip the graphical login?

Hi,
To the graphical login is not one init script like other services it is managed by the /etc/inittab.

To Skip it you can either set the init runlevel to 3 or 4 instead of 5 at the line that states " id:5:initdefault: " (the first line of /etc/inittab) or you might comment out the line that calls for gdm : "x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm" (the last line of /etc/inittab)
