Hello everyone,
it's been two weeks (or more - time flies) and paldo performs amazingly well each and every day.
I am just re-installing paldo-testing-32bit after running "unstable" for a few days. I wanted to see what is to come and it was worth the experience as GIMP 2.5 looks very promising.
I do have a quick question and would value the communities input. What "other" software packages do you install after the basic setup?
For example, I add:
firefox + flash_player
acroread (becasue i read/create a lot of pdf documents)
blender (to get the dependencies so that blender 2.47 form blender.org will run)
bluefish + phpmyadmin + apache (only on one machine)
yafray (for high end renders or some of my blender scenes)
VirtualBox (to run/create flash content on (virtual) Windows XP)
recordmydesktop (to make video tutorials/screen captrues)
filezilla (ftp transfers)
freemind (not tried this yet but liked the demo movie)
scribus (desktop publishing)
skype (only on laptop)
vlc (to play tutorials and the animations we create with blender)

What i'm especially interested in is:
make-iso/make-disk-image ... anybody have comments on those?

Last. I'm not interested in compiz stuff as fast performance is top priority (over looks). Also not interested in security stuff like nmap etc...

But if anybody has a useful application that i didn't list, please take the time and respond

Thank you!

P.S. VirtualBox could not be installed on the "testing branch".
The error message is:
The following packages have been skipped as no binary is available yet:
VirtualBox-2.6.26.3-paldo2-x86 VirtualBox

Something doesn't seem right here?

I just added the new virtualbox 1.6.6. try to install it with

sudo upkg-build --verbose virtualbox

also I'll write an updated guide how to create customized ISO-Images of paldo.
I found a new way to do it using the orginal specs.

Phil,
"Du bist Gold wert!" Amazing!
They say Linux is fast but when it comes to paldo, the developers are "fast" too!

Thank you :)

Well. I think VirtualBox or the build server has some troubles. Only some packages got build of the "new" 1.6.6 version. Today sun released 2.0.0 which I'll update today:

New Sep 4, 2008
VirtualBox 2.0 released!
Today is a significant day in the history of VirtualBox. The brand new version 2.0 comes with major enhancements such as 64-bit VMs, stronger networking capabilities and a native Mac OS X interface. See the change log and check out the press release for the full story.
New Sep 2, 2008
VirtualBox 1.6.6 released!
Sun today released VirtualBox 1.6.6, a maintenance release. See the ChangeLog for a list of changes since VirtualBox 1.6.4.

seems the rls 1.6.6 wasn't necessary at all ...

Virtualbox 2? Awesome!

How would one install this (running paldo 32bit testing branch)?

doing: sudo upkg-install --verbose VirtualBox
generates this message:
The following packages have been skipped as no binary is available yet:
VirtualBox-2.6.26.3-paldo2-x86 VirtualBox

Any hints on what i have to do different?

Thanks :)

since the build-server has troubles and no binary was created for x86. A sudo upkg-build --verbose VirtualBox would build it from the tarball. When we solve the problem you can use the normal upkg-install-cmd. I updated blender also and added the gameengine to testing branch. Pls test it for me.

i had some time and took the BGE for a spin. Indeed, all is well and she works.
Because of bugs in the 2.47 version, I'm using 2.45 and 2.46 in addition to 2.47 as each build has advantages over the other.
How ever, you did a great job making this port available to all the paldo users!

Thanks :)

P.S. As soon as i get copyright clearance for the textures, I'll post a new blender engine demo for the paldo community to test :)

I did suggest including Truecrypt as a cryptographic tool. However, there
are other file encryption software. I hope that one of the following
is included in the packages:

a) ccrypt
b) mcrypt
c) truecrypt
