Hello,
I've been very impressed by the paldo distribution and installed it on my laptop and desktop.
Everything works "out of the box" and after reading a few pages, I've installed a few additional packages like blender, gimp, firefox, filezilla, vlc player ...

What I could use some help on how to install virtual box or vmware player because (so far) they don't run. I can see them in the menu but there must be a configuration part that I am missing.

Any hints and references would be very helpful, especially, if I could get virtualbox or vmware configured.

One more thing:
Is there a way to install bluefish (or a compatible app)?
What's the trick to get flash working in the 64bit release? (it works fine on the laptop - paldo 32bit)
Other than that, everything works amazingly well :-)

Thank you for such a great release!

P.S. I'm a gfx designer and use blender a lot. For some reason, yafray does not want to install ether .... help? :-)

Edit: 24 hours later,
EVERYTHING works, including yafray. YAY!! Thank you :-)

Welcome to paldo. Thx for using it. I'm Philip Miller, one of the devs. Hope I can help you on this early morning with this:

VirtualBox needs a restart. Or you do this in a console:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo modprobe vboxdrv

For flash in 64bit try this:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo upkg-install swfdec-mozilla

What is wrong with yafray?

bluefish I can add to the repo today later. It will be in the testing branch then. For that you've to upgrade to testing also by doing this:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo sed -i -e "s/stable/testing/" /etc/upkg.conf
sudo upkg-upgrade

I can't add new apps to stable right away. The only difference of testing to stable are a few updated programs and the 2.6.26 kernel. Everything else is the same cos we released 1.15 yesterday.

As you are a gfx-designer, can you do me a favour? I need a gfx for a dvd cover for paldo. I put paldo on a dvd media and into a linux magazin here in germany. Since we have no one atm I have to do one. I'm totally not good at it. Would be nice if you can do one. One problem is, that I need it till monday evening. Here more.

Awesome, it all worked and I have VB installed now. YAY!
Thank you for yor fast help - i've replied to your other post regarding the artwork :-)

Hmmm, yafray is resisting ...

[me@hp:~/Desktop]$ sudo upkg-install yafray
Generating script...
Writing script...
Executing script...
The following packages have been skipped as no binary is available yet:
yafray

System already up-to-date.

Am i doing this right? Thanks :-)

Because "paldo" is featured on distrowatch.org, there is a good chance that people will browse the forum for additional information.
That is the reason why I'd like to sum up my first impression of this (new to me) distro.

About 2 days ago, I was working on an animation project when I noticed that the directories on my desktop take longer and longer to open. When the delay reached about a minute, I knew it's time to back up my work and re install.
For a long time now I have wished for a distro that was professional. No junk (or as little as possible) and geared towards those who need to be productive.

Today i have found the distro i was wishing it exists and God knows, I tried many over the last few years. My time is very valuable to me and therefore I want a Linux distro that takes the headache of endless configuration and frustration away.
First thing that impressed me was that out of the box, everything worked. Given, my machines were chosen with hardware in mind that is supported under Linux but still, there's usually a lot of time needed to set everything up correctly.

Here is what I love about paldo:
GFX drivers are included! YAY - We all install them anyway so why make us go the extra mile in post installation? Paldo does this right!
Next, this is the first distro that set up my network! I couldn't believe it! WOW, this is impressive.
The apps i need are available! Those are blender, gimp & inkscape first and after that open office, recordmydesktop and virtualbox.
I look forward to introducing this new find at work come Monday!

Thanks to Amnon82 for the fast reply and helping me getting flash and virtualbox going!

Awesome stuff!

Did I mention that it is the fastest distro so far? My blender benchmark file rendered in one minute and 10 seconds that is 20 seconds faster than the previous distro i used!

Thank you to all the developers who created paldo! I wish I had known about paldo earlier!

To those searching for a clever and fast Linux distro:
Download the live image and take it for a spin, you'll see what i mean

Hmm. Do this:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo upkg-build yafray

If there is no binary atm you've to build it from source. More about package managment here:

http://www.paldo.org/wiki/PackageManagement

Well the german one is better in detail. Will update it soon.

yafray had a build problem yesterday, which has been fixed in the meantime. The following command should work fine now:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
upkg-install yafray

Sometimes it happens also that some mistake are in the system
It is always better to install binary-packages to avoid the troubles on your own machine.

If there is an error it is better to use verbose to see where exactly the problem occurs:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo upkg-build --verbose PACKAGENAME

So, as I promised I readded bluefish to the main-repo. It was removed, but I don't know why. Maybe there was a better app as replacement.

I used followed configure line for building it:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
./configure --prefix=/usr --libexecdir=/usr/lib --infodir=/usr/share/info --mandir=/usr/share/man
--sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --disable-static --enable-shared --disable-splash-screen
--enable-highlight-profiling

Here are the rest of the options:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
Optional Features:
--disable-FEATURE do not include FEATURE (same as --enable-FEATURE=no)
--enable-FEATURE[=ARG] include FEATURE [ARG=yes]
--enable-auto-optimization
try to automatically determine the most optimal
build options for your architecture
--enable-gcc3-optimization=type
gcc3 can optimize for: i386, i486, pentium,
pentium-mmx, pentiumpro, pentium2, pentium3,
pentium4, k6, k6-2, k6-3, athlon, athlon-tbird,
athlon-4, athlon-xp, athlon-mp, winchip-c6,
winchip2, c3
--enable-gcc2-optimization=type
gcc2 can optimize for: i386, i486, pentium,
pentiumpro, k6
--enable-debugging-output
Turns massive debugging output on, will slow down
the program!
--disable-splash-screen disables the splash screen
--enable-highlight-profiling
Enables profiling information about highlighting
patterns
--enable-development Enables development checks, will slow down the
program!
--enable-gprof-profiling
Enables gprof profiling, will slow down the program!
--enable-gcov-coverage Enables coverage, will slow down the program!
--disable-update-databases
do not run the update-desktop-database or
update-mime-database utilities, mostly useful for
package maintainers
--disable-nls do not use Native Language Support

Optional Packages:
--with-PACKAGE[=ARG] use PACKAGE [ARG=yes]
--without-PACKAGE do not use PACKAGE (same as --with-PACKAGE=no)
--without-libgnomeui disable libgnomeui detection
--with-gnome1-menu enable gnome1 menu, use --with-gnome1-menu=/path to
override the gnome1 prefix default
/usr/share/gnome/apps
--without-freedesktop_org-menu
disable freedesktop_org menu, use
--with-freedesktop_org-menu=/path to override the
default location /usr/share/applications
--without-freedesktop_org-mime
disable freedesktop_org mime, use
--with-freedesktop_org-mime=/path to override the
default location /usr/share/mime
--without-gnome2_4-mime disable gnome2.4 mime install, use
--with-gnome2_4-mime=/path to override the default
/usr/share/mime-info
--without-gnome2_4-appreg
disable gnome2.4 application-registry install, use
--with-gnome2_4-appreg=/path to override the default
/usr/share/application-registry
--without-icon-path do not install icon in /usr/share/pixmaps/, use
--with-icon-path=/path to override the default path
--with-libiconv-prefix=DIR search for libiconv in DIR/include and DIR/lib
--with-included-gettext use the GNU gettext library included here

Tell me if you need another option added otherwise I hope it is the best config for you atm.
