Paldo 1.14's boot process hangs at "Starting HAL daemon" with the en_US locale. No problem with en_CH. I have experienced this on two different Pentium IV machines, one with an Intel graphics card and another one with nVidia.

I justed tried paldo-1.14-stable on virtualbox. It booted well. What date has your image? Maybe test unstable-image also on your pc. I assume you tested the 32bit version of paldo.

Yes, it was 32-bit paldo-live-cd-stable-2008-05-11-0058. The problem persists in paldo-live-cd-testing-2008-05-14-2132, 32-bit version.

It may be a memory issue: the machine I am using now only has 348 MB of RAM. May locale switching cause a memory leak?

Precisely the same thing happens to me. Cannot boot live CD using US English - hangs at HAL. Can boot en-CH. Booted en_CH, then installed, but used en_US to install. Boot after installation, same problem: hangs on HAL...

Not a memory issue for me, 1 GB.

If it helps, I did not have this problem on an earlier version: 2007-11-05 booted and installed fine.

Well I posted already a complain to this issue:

http://forum.paldo.org/index.php?action=topic&topicnr=357

Here is my test result (paldo-testing: Build Date: 2008-05-21 21:10 GMT):

en_CH > OK
en_UK > OK
en_US > HANGS ON HAL
fr_FR > HANGS ON HAL
fr_CH > OK
de_DE > HANGS ON HAL
de_CH > OK
it_IT > OK
it_CH > OK
pl_PL > OK
pt_PT > OK
es_ES > OK
tr_TR > OK

Well I'm using always de_DE so I was surprised that my work-pc hangs on HAL but not my other two pcs with the same iso-image. With stable-images all three pcs booting well. Hopefully we will fix this issue soon. At least I've one PC to test this issue. btw. this problem has also something to do with my shutdown problem: http://forum.paldo.org/index.php?action=topic&topicnr=344

Juerg is still searching for the problem. He suspects a loadkeys bug in the new kernel. He wanted to dig deeper.

I build a kernel myself and it fixed my problem regarding to juergs tipps.
If you want to test it yourself, use my source-repository.

First you've to update your system to the latest testing-branch:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo sed -i -e "s/stable/testing/" /etc/upkg.conf

Then do a normal upgrade:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo upkg-upgrade --verbose

After that add my repository to your local upkg.conf

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo sed -i -e 's%<repositories>%&\n<repository>http://paldo.org/~amnon/kernel_repo/</repository>%' /etc/upkg.conf

Then do another upgrade but with source-packages enabled:

Code[In neuem Fenster öffnen]
sudo upkg-upgrade --verbose --enable-source

For any problem pm me or post here.

I have now twice successfully used paldo 1.14 live with en_US keyboard, then installed it successfully w/ no problem on reboot. However, this time I'm using the amd_64 version on a dual Opteron setup.

Apparently, whatever the problem is, it occurs only in the 32-bit version or, perhaps, only on intel CPUs.
