After being in development for about six months, GNOME 2.26 has been released. New in GNOME 2.26.0 is the integration of the Brasero disc burning utility, volume control integration with PulseAudio, improved display management support (powered by RandR), and many other desktop enhancements.

Also released for GNOME 2.26.0 was GTK+ 2.16, which has a few improvements as well. The release notes for GNOME 2.26 with complete coverage for all of the new features can be found at GNOME.org.

We added Gnome 2.26 to our testing branch. 2.27 Series starts today with unstable branch to see what 2.28 would look like.

What is ExTiX/paldo?

Previous versions of ExTiX were based on KNOPPIX/Debian. Version 6.0 of ExTiX is based on the Swiss Linux System paldo 1.15. paldo is a Upkg driven GNU/Linux distribution. It's kind of a mix of a source and a binary distribution. Even though it builds packages like a source distribution it provides binary packages. paldo aims to be simple, pure, up to date and standards compliant.

What is the difference between paldo and ExTiX?

ExTiX has full Swedish language support and many more programs installed than paldo. As ExTiX also comes with kernel sources you can recompile the kernel 2.6.25.15 if you need to (or just for fun). paldo live cd is of 669 MB. ExTiX live dvd is of 1270 MB.

This new version of ExTiX Linux Live DVD includes the 2.6.25.15 kernel by default, Gnome 2.22.3, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, all development tools incl. the kernel source, GIMP 2.4.6, Skype 2.0 (Free Internet Telephony), Apache (Web Server), all win32-codecs, Vlc 0.8.6.i janus, GParted 0.3.8, aMule 2.2.2 (file sharing), Opera Web Browser 9.52, Wine 1.0-1, gFTP 2.0.18, Scribus 1.3.3.10-1 and Gnome Web Browser 2.22.3. UnionFS stacks your ExTiX ramdisk on top of the read-only filesystem on the DVD, the effect being that you can upkg-install, and otherwise modify all of the files on the running system as though they were all writeable. The standard Gnome and System language is English. You can, however, easily change language and keyboard layout to Swedish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish or Turkish. Change the language before you log in to the Gnome Desktop. To change keyboard layout: Go to System >> Preferences >> Keyboard >> Layouts >> +Add...).

System Requirements

Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or better), 512 MB of RAM, a bootable DVD drive (IDE/ATAPI, Firewire, USB or SCSI), a standard SVGA-compatible graphics card, and a standard serial or PS/2 mouse, or IMPS/2-compatible USB Mouse.

How do I run ExTiX?

In order to start the DVD, first adjust the boot list in the BIOS Setup of your computer to boot from CD/DVD (before the hard drive). Put the DVD in and restart the computer. You run ExTiX as root (superadmin) or as linuxuser. Root's and linuxuser's password is stocksund. ExTiX can also be installed to hard disk. Just follow the link (ExTiX-Installer) on the desktop. Apache

Run command httpd -k start to start the server. Open a Web Browser and go to http://localhost.

How do I install and remove programs?

ExTiX/paldo uses Upkg, which is about the same as Debians Apt (Advanced Package Tool). The most important commands are upkg-install programname och upkg-remove programname. You can read about package management with Upkg HERE. Upkg works extremely well. I have, however, installed Vlc and aMule from source (since working versions of Vlc and aMule can't be found in paldo's repositories). You can also install programs in ExTiX from source using the commands 1) ./configure --prefix=/usr 2) make 3) make install.

paldo 1.15 released

We are pleased to announce the release of paldo 1.15 with many bug fixes and updates.

It features the latest stable GNOME 2.22.3 desktop, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1, Firefox 3.0.1, Eclipse 3.4, and VirtualBox 1.6.2. Also included are Linux kernel 2.6.25.15 to support new devices, X.org 7.3, updated proprietary drivers for NVIDIA and AMD graphic cards, and Wammu 0.27 to simplify cell phone synchronization.

NetworkManager 0.7 enables easy internet connections with GSM/UMTS and DSL. With SMPlayer 0.6.1 playing videos and DVDs has a new comfort. The easy-to-use graphical installer has been updated to make the installation from the Live CD as simple as possible. All packages have been rebuilt with the updated toolchain: GCC 4.3 and glibc 2.8.

Hi girls and guys of Paldo-Community,

I managed to put our loved linux distribution on the magazin-dvd of the german Linux Magazin "LinuxUser 10/2008". Release date is the 18.09.2008.

We will be part of the article series "Tux International" representing Swiss.
I wrote about our distribution and everbody at the editorial staff of linuxnewmedia loves my article.

Seems I've to work on the image for the magazin. Hope 1.15 will be ready then. DDay will be the 22.08.08 to put us on the disc. I'll think both archs will be on the dvd.

good news. We managed to put the new paldo-installer to the testing branch. Now everybody can test it with the live-cd in 32 and 64 bit.



Features of the installer 0.1.3

• you can install it on 4 partitions (boot/root/home/swap)
  
• add one user account (we will add an option to add more than one later)
  
• autoformat unformated partitions
  
• it has a nice gtk-gui and is easy to use

What we need you for

We want to add the installer to the next stable release of paldo so we need you as beta-testers. Tell us what went wrong. What we missed. What is not so good. etc.

Here are some examples what you can test

1-set: paldo on one partition (root)
2-set: paldo on two partitions (root+home, root+swap, root+boot)
3-set: paldo on three partitions (root+home+swap, root+boot+swap, root+home+boot)
4-set: paldo on four partitions (root+home+swap+boot)

We are working hard to get it done the way we all like it.

The new paldo-installer is planed for release 1.12 so our actual release don't has an installer on the livecd. Therefor my installer cd image jumps in.
